Fragrant, full-flavored herb with large, bright green, tender leaves
The leaves bruise easily, losing texture and some of their flavor in chopping, so they are best shredded using scissors
The flavor of basil diminishes on cooking, so it is usually added late in the preparation of a dish
The flavor of dried basil does not compare well with that of the fresh herb so it is best avoided in this form
Buy growing pots or plant a large potful outside in summer months
Use any excess for making pesto.
