OLD FASHIONED MEAT LOAF
  • Ingredients
  • 1 pound ground sirloin
  • 1/4 pound pork sausage
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon butter or margarine, melted
  • 3 slices bread, crumbled
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 /8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1-1/4 teaspoons ground sage
  • 1 beef bouillon cube
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 4 strips bacon
  • 4 tablespoons chili sauce
Directions
  1. Combine all ingredients except last four in a large mix- ing bowl
  2. Dissolve bouillon in the boiling water and add to mixture
  3. Shape into a loaf and place in greased bak- ing pan
  4. Top with bacon strips
  5. Bake in moderate oven (350 F.)
  6. After meat has baked approximately 25 min- utes, remove from oven and spoon chili sauce on top of loaf
  7. Return to oven for another 35-40 minutes. DUTCH OVEN INSTRUCTIONS: If baking in your Dutch oven on the stovetop, preheat oven or kettle to moderate (350 F.) and place rack or trivet on bottom of oven
  8. Place meat loaf pan on rack
  9. Cover Dutch oven tightly with lid and bake 15-20 minutes
  10. Open lid and spoon chili sauce on top
  11. Then vent lid on both sides and bake 35-40 minutes more.
